Row Subtraction Without Borrow

Subtraction can be performed by drawing sticks equal to the first digit in the question and then cross sticks equal to second digit the remaining stick gives the desired result.

For example let us solve the question

In the figure below there is a bundle of 10 sticks representing digit 1 at the tens place in the first number 13 and 3 sticks representing 3 at units place in the number 13.

No we have to cross 2 sticks for the second number 2.

Now there is a bundle of 10 sticks and one stick extra.

So the total sticks remaining are 11.

Now we will have 1 at the tens place represented by the bundle and 1 at units place represented by 1 stick.

Hence the answer is 11.
